My baby is almost 4 weeks old. For the first week and a half he was feeding every 3-4 hrs. Now he is feeding every 2 hrs for about 10 minutes each time. He feeds until he falls asleep at the breast or pulls away. But then, maybe 15 minutes later, he’ll want to feed again. My breasts don't appear to be as "full" as they should be...well they aren't hard all the time; they are more so soft like my pre pregnancy breasts. Every now and then my breasts will fill up and feel hard like rocks, it’s then that I express and save the excess for later to top him up after a feed. Over the last few days I have given him formula, twice now to substitute a breast feed (as suggested by the child health nurse). This was to hopefully see if he was getting enough and to see if he would stay fuller for longer. He does sleep for longer after a formula feed. However, it is not my intention to switch him to formula as I have my heart set on breast feeding. Can anyone (who has experienced something similar) respond to any of my concerns? How long should he be feeding for? How often? And how much? How should my breasts feel? Hard? Soft? Firm? Combination of all? Is it normal to feed every 2 hrs sometimes every hour? How do I know if I have a low milk supply? (My baby seems satisfied after each feed.)
